The Instructional Design Project

1. Define an Instructional Design Project

Instructions:

You may choose from one of the following options:

  • Team with a partner in class to offer expertise on an unfamiliar topic.
  • Consider how you would approach a UN volunteer opportunity (Links to an external site.) related to instructional design.
  • Offer your expertise to an organization in the community - Denver Urban Scholars (offering wrap-around services to k16 students in Denver).

I chose to find an opportunity on the UN volunteer website.

The project I chose was from  Coalition for Work With Psychotrauma and Peace

Description of the Project:

You will build your learning solution throughout the semester. There are four different components of the assignment:

  • Learner persona profile

  • Design document with learning objectives

  • Example learning solution with assessment

  • Evaluation plan

Insturctions: In the Framework for Empathy (Links to an external site.) article, the authors discuss four phases of empathy:

  • Discovery (entering the learner’s world) – What is his/her background? What experience does s/he have in the organization and field? What have been successful/unsuccessful learning moments?

  • Immersion (wandering around the learner’s world and taking his/her point of reference) – What is the learner’s role in the organization? How does s/he fit in the effort to meet organizational goals?

  • Connection (resonating with the learner) – What is happening with the learner? What is his/her specific performance, knowledge, and skills gap? How is it impacting his/her daily performance?

  • Detachment (leaving the learner’s world and designing with learner’s perspective) – What learning solution would respond to the learner’s needs? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each learning solution? What are unintended consequences of each solution?

Design Document

In this assignment you will draft a document that outlines your primary design decisions for your learning solution.

You will include the following in the Design Document:

  • Overview

  • Summary of Analysis

    • Description of learners

    • Example learner persona profile

  • Instructional Design Model

    • Length and site of learning solution

    • Sequencing of content

    • Plan to design for motivation, habits, skills, knowledge, etc. (refer to Dirksen text with in-text citations, as needed)

  • Proposed Learning Solution

    • Summary of learning solution

    • Description how it responds to learner needs

    • Plan for assessing knowledge

  • Instructional Objectives and Content Outline

  • Mock-Up

    • Interface

    • Flow of instruction

  • Assumptions

  • Schedule and Communication

    • Timeline

    • Project tracking plan

    • Communication plan

  • Summary
